The short answer

How do you add more weight?

Replace the machine selector pin with a correctly sized cable stack extender, then load a compatible Olympic plate. Always check the machine limits, clearance and gym rules first.

If you have reached the full stack on a cable machine, a compatible cable stack extender lets you add Olympic weight plates without replacing the machine. It takes the place of the selector pin and creates a 2-inch loading sleeve outside the stack. Before using one, check the machine’s limits, measure the selector-pin hole and get permission from the gym owner.

How to add more weight to a cable machine

  1. Check the machine and ask permission. Confirm that the gym allows selector-pin extenders and follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. Never treat an extender’s rating as permission to exceed the machine’s own limit.
  2. Measure the selector-pin hole. Cable machines commonly use an 8mm or 10mm pin, but do not estimate by eye. Use the GymPin 8mm or 10mm size guide before ordering.
  3. Choose the right cable stack extender. Allow enough clearance around the stack for the sleeve and plates. The Original GymPin is the all-round option, the MiniPin suits tighter spaces, and the longer KingPin is designed for heavier loading on compatible 10mm stacks.
  4. Insert the GymPin fully. Remove the machine’s selector pin, select the required stack weight, then push the GymPin through the chosen plate until it is properly seated.
  5. Add a compatible Olympic plate. Load the 2-inch sleeve evenly and make sure the plate cannot foul the machine frame, shroud, guide rods or cable.
  6. Test with a light, controlled repetition. Check that the stack travels freely before increasing the load. Do not drop or slam the stack.

What is a cable stack extender?

A cable stack extender is a replacement selector pin with an external loading sleeve. A normal selector pin chooses how many plates in the machine’s stack will move. An extender does the same job while also providing space for an extra Olympic plate.

This is useful when the next built-in weight jump is too large, when you want a smaller progression, or when the full stack no longer provides enough resistance for an exercise. It can be used for movements such as lat pulldowns, seated rows, cable curls and triceps pressdowns, provided the machine is compatible.

Which GymPin cable stack extender should you choose?

Model Pin sizes Best for Important detail
The Original 2-inch GymPin 8mm or 10mm Everyday cable-stack loading where there is normal side clearance A versatile selector-pin replacement for 2-inch Olympic plates
The 2-inch MiniPin 8mm or 10mm Machines where space beside the stack is limited A more compact loading sleeve than the Original
KingPin 10mm only Compatible 10mm stacks where a longer loading area is required Rated for up to 60kg of added plates; never slam the stack

All three models accept plates with a 2-inch (approximately 50mm) centre hole. The correct choice depends on pin diameter, available clearance and the machine’s own operating limits—not simply how much weight you want to add. Browse all GymPin cable stack extenders if you want to compare the range.

How to tell whether you need an 8mm or 10mm GymPin

Remove the original selector pin and measure the diameter of the shaft that enters the weight stack. A digital calliper gives the clearest reading. If the measurement is close to 8mm, choose the 8mm version; if it is close to 10mm, choose the 10mm version. Check more than one point and do not include a knob, handle or retaining feature in the measurement.

Fit matters. A pin that is too large will not enter the hole, while one that is too small may not sit as intended. If the measurement is unclear, use the full measuring guide or ask the gym or machine manufacturer before buying.

How much extra weight can you add?

The safe amount is determined by the lowest limit in the complete setup: the machine, cable, pulleys, frame, weight stack, GymPin and plates. Adding a cable stack extender does not increase the manufacturer’s rating for the machine.

Start with the smallest useful plate and test the full path of the exercise under control. The KingPin itself is rated for a maximum of 60kg of added plates, but that does not mean every compatible-looking cable machine can safely accept 60kg. If the equipment’s limit is unavailable, do not guess.

Why use a cable machine add-on weight?

Continue progressive overload

When you can perform the top of your planned repetition range with good technique, a small increase in resistance can keep the exercise challenging. An added plate can bridge the gap between built-in stack increments or take the resistance beyond the final plate where the machine permits it.

Use smaller weight increments

Some cable stacks jump by 5kg, 10kg or more. Loading a small Olympic plate can create a more manageable step, which is particularly useful for isolation exercises where a full stack increment would disrupt technique.

Keep familiar cable exercises in your programme

Reaching the full stack does not necessarily mean abandoning a movement that suits you. On a suitable machine, an extender can keep lat pulldowns, seated rows, pressdowns, curls and flyes progressing without changing the exercise setup.

Cable machine safety and compatibility checklist

  • Get permission before using your own equipment in a commercial gym.
  • Check the machine manufacturer’s instructions and maximum load.
  • Use the correct 8mm or 10mm pin size.
  • Inspect the GymPin, machine, cable and plates before every use.
  • Insert the pin fully through the selected stack plate.
  • Use only plates that fit the 2-inch loading sleeve correctly.
  • Make sure the added plate clears the shroud, frame, guide rods and floor through the whole movement.
  • Add load gradually and keep every repetition controlled.
  • Never drop or slam the weight stack.
  • Stop immediately if the pin shifts, the plate contacts the machine, or any component bends, frays or behaves unusually.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add extra weight to any cable machine?

No. The selector-pin diameter, hole depth, side clearance and machine rating all need to be suitable. Some enclosed or unusually shaped stacks will not accept an extender. Check the machine and obtain the gym owner’s permission first.

Does a cable stack extender replace the selector pin?

Yes. A GymPin is inserted into the chosen weight-stack plate in place of the machine’s original selector pin. The external sleeve then holds the added Olympic plate.

Can I use standard weight plates?

GymPin’s 2-inch extenders are made for Olympic plates with an approximately 50mm centre hole. Plates with a smaller standard 1-inch hole will not fit the 2-inch sleeve.

Should I choose an 8mm or 10mm GymPin?

Measure the shaft of the machine’s original selector pin. Choose the matching GymPin size rather than assuming that a particular brand or model always uses the same diameter.

Will a GymPin damage the cable machine?

A correctly sized GymPin used within the machine’s limits should sit in the selector-pin hole and move with the stack. Damage becomes more likely if the pin is the wrong size, the plate collides with the frame, the machine is overloaded or the stack is slammed. Compatibility checks and controlled repetitions are essential.

Add weight to your cable machine with the right setup

A cable stack extender is a simple way to add more weight or create smaller increments, but the setup must be compatible from pin to plate. Measure first, respect the machine’s limits and build the load gradually. Compare the Original GymPin, compact MiniPin and 10mm KingPin to find the right option for your cable stack.
