Start with the machine

The phrase ‘add more weight’ describes two different problems

Some lifters reach the top of a selectorised weight stack. Others still have plates available but run out of physical space on a plate-loaded machine’s weight horn. The solutions are not interchangeable.

Identify the limitation first, then measure the relevant parts and choose equipment designed for that exact loading problem.

Selectorised machines

When the cable machine weight stack is no longer enough

Selectorised machines use a pin to connect the chosen plate to the moving stack. Once every plate is selected, a compatible GymPin can provide a separate Olympic loading sleeve so additional plates move with the stack.

This can preserve useful rows, pulldowns, presses, curls and triceps movements when measurable progressive overload is required.

Important distinction

A GymPin does not increase the machine manufacturer’s rated capacity

It creates an additional loading method. The machine, cable, pulleys, frame and weight-stack assembly still have mechanical limits. Added resistance must remain within the safe capability of the complete machine and should only be used after compatibility and permission have been confirmed.

Plate-loaded equipment can become limited by sleeve length before the intended training load is reached. This is common with thicker plates, short horns or stronger lifters.

Why progressive overload sometimes exposes machine limitations

Progressive overload means increasing the training demand over time. Load is one method, alongside more repetitions, improved control, longer range of motion, reduced assistance and better execution. Adding weight is useful only when technique and the equipment remain stable.

A maxed-out stack does not automatically mean more weight is the correct next step. The lifter should first confirm that the movement is controlled, the intended muscles are doing the work and the chosen rep range supports the programme. When added load is appropriate, the correct loading accessory can extend the useful life of a productive machine exercise.

Use load as one progression tool

More resistance can support strength and hypertrophy when it is introduced gradually. It should not replace sound technique or turn every repetition into a collision between steel parts.
